Salmon kebabs, roasted broccoli, pistachio pilaf. Accompanied by the genre-bending Rosalía and followed by a belated Fawkes-day bonfire.

Lots and lots of garlic
Lamb tagine and mushrooms with hummus (plus an unpictured side salad) involved at least 2.5 heads – some roasted, some fresh. Not quite like being at The Stinking Rose, but almost? We listened to Robert Wyatt. He did not stink.

Jujubes
We got fresh jujubes in our farm share. Korean is a cuisine that loves jujubes, so we made galbijjim (and kimchi, and rice). A delicious solution to our dilemma. Soundtrack: Caravan.

Southern comfort
Where else to turn when life (your farm share) gives you green tomatoes? Fry them. Serve them with black-eyed peas and slaw. Listen to Soft Machine.

All of the flavors
A Sicilian dish that somehow balanced more morels, capers, olives, sundried tomatoes, and herbs than I thought possible. Nilüfer Yanya was along for the ride; highly recommend.

Day of Ben...
…fell on a Sunday this year, so we celebrated the whole day long. He’s been gone 15 years, and we still remember him by his favorite foods (and drinks). This year we created a playlist: lots of punk, ska, reggae, random references and inside jokes. It was perfect.

Tuna two ways
Romesco risotto with seafood and a kohlrabi tonnato doused in capers and herbs. What were we listening to, again?

We made bao!
Turned out amazingly, despite our lack of bamboo steamer and some outdated yeast. Filled with Taiwanese-spice braised pork, topped with pickled shallots, cilantro, and ground peanuts. On a bed of quick-pickled cabbage. Accompanied by Lambrini Girls and High Vis.

We bought a grill
Saudi Arabian-inspired scallops, zucchini, and pilaf for our first venture with outdoor cooking in Kansas. Skids were along for the ride.

This is spring
Indian mushroom ‘sloppy joes’ accompanied by asparagus and peas (and more red onion) in mustard sauce.
Finally got around to listening to Cabaret Voltaire. More industrial than punk, still Dada. Perfect for a rainy Sunday afternoon.

Happy 40th, duder
Ethiopian salmon, a delicious pineapple drink, Red Stripe beer (or the closest we could get), and the blast of vitriol and adrenaline that is Amyl & The Sniffers. Good party.

Hidden gems
Listened to Cindy Lee’s Diamond Jubilee.
Washed it down with Mughal cauliflower.

Just a little something
To use the acorn squash we had from our farm share. Happy Valentine’s, happy anniversary. We listened to Holst and Ten Holt.

Bienvenidos
Cookbooks are getting to be a staple holiday gift. Now our collection includes Diana Kennedy’s culinary guide to Mexico. First stop: enchiladas de Jalisco.
Our ears revisited an old favorite, Gang of Four. We also met Idles.

Everything Mozambique
Apologies for the Dutch angle on the photo here, but it was tough to capture all the things we made: berry punch, greens in coconut milk, xima (aka nshima, ugali, etc.), roast bird, and 2 kinds of piri-piri sauce. Isis (the band) kept us company.

Seriously, you guys
This spicy mushroom lasagna from Ottolenghi was so good I almost forgot what we were listening to.
Which would be a shame, because it was Harry Nilsson.

The k's have it
Korean stew, two kinds of kimchi, to the tune of Klaatu.

Perfect combination
Matoke, green plantain stew from Tanzania. Paired nicely with spiced pilau rice and the Anthology of American Folk Music.
